Pontiac started in 1893 as “The Pontiac Buggy Company”, then the brand became part of Oakland Motor Co in 1907 and was later acquired by General Motors President William C. Durant in 1909. GM re-established the Pontiac brand in 1926 as a lower-priced performance automotive option. The Pontiac Chief of 1927 became an huge selling success and put the brand on the auto map; from there it steadily grew, making iconic cars like the Pontiac Torpedo in the 40’s, the Bonneville in the late 50’s, and the Pontiac GTO in the 60’s. The Pontiac brand saw its retirement in 2010 however, as GM consolidated its brands into 4 makes: Chevy, Buick, GMC. Pontiac innovation and performance is not gone though, its successes influences current and future GM automotive innovation.
